March 2014

In February, I added a new ministry opportunity to my list: Covenant Hospice . God had laid it on my heart to pray for the city of Blountstown. Specifically, I was praying for God to show me how to start ministering to my town. I read an ad in the paper that said Covenant Hospice was doing volunteer training in Blountstown. So I decided to check it out. I have a few more trainings to do yet, but I am excited about having this opportunity.

For those who like stats, February brought:

  • 20 working days
  • 3 new weekly programs provided by volunteers - Character Qualities, Celebrate Recovery, and Self-Worth
  • 10 active volunteers
  • 31 hours donated by volunteers
  • 21 religious programming events
  • 12 Reentry Programming events
  • Monthly Attendance - 90
  • First Sunday Worship Service
  • 1800 miles / $300 on fuel
God has truly been good to our family. Pray that we will continue to hear God's heart as we seek to minister to those in prison and in our community. I am working on establishing a mentoring program. Please pray for this opportunity for believers to come along side these men to walk with them through their transition back into society.

February 2014

January was a month of new beginnings. The first Chapel Service at Gadsden Reentry Center on Saturday, January 25, 2014 with 4 inmates attending. January has been a slow month in terms of chapel programs at Gadsden Reentry Center. Please pray for me that I will be patient with the startup process. It appears that I will have to learn some new processes for interacting with DOC since I am working as a contracted employee through the Unlimited Path, Inc. instead of a state employee.

Monthly numbers:
  • 2 Services with 13 total attending
  • Inmate Contacts (visitation in the dorm, work areas, and visiting park plus contact through services and programs) – 280
  • Interviews (orientation, religious, premarital, prerelease, death and crisis notification) – 34
Please pray with us as we look for a more economical vehicle. The round trip every day is 90 miles. My Jeep gets about 20 mpg. I'm hoping for something that gets at least 30 mpg.

Most of all pray that I will not lose focus on the main objective - building His kingdom.

Thanks to all of you for your support of the ministry at GRC.

September Newsletter

Yoking Up With Jesus E-newsletter

A Story From The Other Side of the Fence
At the age of 16 years old, I, Kevin Dean, was sentenced to life without parole.  Being a teenager in a man’s domain, I got involved with drugs, riots, living for the moment, never caring about the consequences.  Over the years I was getting worse while thinking I was getting better.
For 15 years I lived as if I was god.  In 2008, my mother passed away.  That’s when everything got worse.  I blamed God for me coming to prison and then, on top of that, He takes my only solace and the only person who I knew that loved me.  So I guess you can understand when I told myself that it was just me…  I dove into the world head first.  This (prison) is where I would die, so why not live?
In 2009, I went to close management (C.M.) for doing something I knew I had no business doing.   But hey, I’ve been in the chain gang since I was 16 and I still have life without parole so I did what I wanted too.  Coming off C.M. in 2010, I was sent to Gulf C.I., a prison I did not want to be at.  I was assigned to live in “H3” dormitory where I met a man younger than me, whose name is Norberto Rivera, that was involved in the chapel program called Abundant Life.  He came to my room looking for a King James Bible.
Norberto started asking me to help him with his studies. So I did.  We grew to become great friends.  He asked me to come to church and to get involved in some classes.  I said no, my perception of the church and its God was tainted.  Yet, with some more persuasion and being placed on the call-out, I came.
The Abundant Life class was going over lesson # 4 “The 2 Nature Struggle”.  It was as if a truck hit me and woke me up.  That’s it!!  You see, what you don’t know is that at the age of 15 I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and was saved. Yet, at the age of 16 I shot and killed my father.   I lived for 15 years thinking that I wasn’t saved nor could be saved.  I went back to my dorm and that night I asked God to please forgive me and come into my life.  And if He saved me all those many years ago then why am I like I am. That next morning He showed me in His Word Hosea 6th chapter where I have to return to Him.  He then led me to 2 Corinthians 3:17 and to 2 Corinthians 5:17.
Since then I’ve grown in this process of Sanctification.  The Lord has changed my way of thinking.  He’s gotten me involved in His mission also.  Now I share to the world around me the God who I was running from.  I have a totally new outlook on life, thanks to Jesus Christ. I just recently found out that I have a parole hearing coming up soon, which would’ve been impossible because I got sentenced in 1995 to life without parole. But God…
I remain no longer a condemned murderer, but a redeemed saint!

Thoughts to Ponder
What one word could be used to summarize what Christianity is really about? Jesus talked about this in Luke 10. He said “Do this and you will have eternal life”. What is “this”? Love God and people. Jesus says that love is expressed through mercy.
The one word that is implied throughout the New Testament is “relationship”. The actions that we are encouraged to take often include a direction “to one another”. This means that the actions are mutual. God’s children live in community and pursue relationships with God and people. The way we approach relationships must be consistent with the Gospel.
By “this” everyone will know that you are my followers - Jesus

Family Happenings
Hard to believe we are so near the end of September already!! Today we started week 6 of school for the ‘13-’14 year. It’s going well! Danny has a bigger workload since he is in High School, but he is really enjoying his studies! Today, we are celebrating International Home School Spirit week by staying in our PJ’s! :) No, homeschoolers don’t usually stay in their PJ’s all day!!

I am very much looking forward to some cool Fall weather, but I’ll be patient and not rush it along. The outside of the house is waiting for some TLC, too. We need to weed flower beds, do some shrub trimming and lots of weed whacking! The dogs like to add their touch by digging fresh holes to lay in!  :(
The September Fundraiser Banquet for GEMS went very well this year.

It was neat to hear testimonies from 5 former inmates, one who Dan had the privilege of mentoring. Nearly $12,000 was raised. That amount goes to support 8 chaplains and doesn't last long, so the planning is in full swing for the Benefit Auction on November 9. If you live nearby, mark your calendars!! :) I had the job of decorating for the banquet, so the kids and I went to Tallahassee the day before and helped get things set up.

While we were in Tall. we were also able to join our homeschool group on a field trip to Native Nurseries. We got to sit through a workshop teaching about the life of a caterpillar and the transformation they go through to turn into a butterfly. It’s so amazing, but just another sign of a wonderful Creator!! We also saw many pretty flowers, some large spiders and other “garden creatures”.

Last weekend some of the men and boys from church went on a kayaking trip. They left Friday afternoon, kayaked an hour to a sand bar, where they set up camp for the night. Then Saturday morning, after breakfast they traveled another 4-5 hours where they got picked up. They had a good time with little sleep! :) Thankful for safety! Just about a week before that, I saw an article about a 708 lb. alligator that was killed in that very same river!! :O

I am looking forward to spending the day on Wed. with my sister Chris, who lives in south GA. I don’t get to see her real often and this time she is coming to MY house. :) Also looking forward to a visit from my nephew Javin and his wife Vironica in a few weeks. It’s been awhile since we had company, so this will be a treat again! :)
I saw a neat quote today that we can all take to heart. “My ministry is where my feet are”. We don’t have to go to other countries to be a be the hands and feet of Jesus. Our home is a good place to start!
Have a great week….be a blessing to someone! :)

Prayer Requests
*That we would be able to discern God’s will for some possibilities in the near future.
*That we would continue to grow in our love for others!.
*Pray for Chaplain Ring as he is getting ready to retire from Gulf CI and is struggling with various health issues.
*Inmates who have been released and need to find their way in society again. Especially those who have committed their lives to Christ...that they can remain strong!

Needs

**URGENT** Dan’s Jeep is in the shop and needs a new clutch that will cost $580.
** Dan and Twila both need dental work very soon, but we have to wait for funds!

Our projected 2013 support goal~ $6000 ($500 a month)
Received last month~ $0
Received so far in 2013~ $1250

We are $3250 behind our goal for this year.

GEMS supports us by providing us with a house to live in. We do not receive monthly monetary support from them. Dan does receive some income from the state that is sufficient to pay our recurring monthly bills, gas and food. We count on support to help cover anything above that, including dental, eye care, school tuition, medical bills, car repairs, appliance replacement, clothes, and other things that come up unexpectedly!
Thank you for prayerfully considering how you can help!

August Update

A Story From The Other Side of the Fence

Old State Cup
By: Michael Pitts
While sitting in County Jail awaiting sentencing and my inevitable return to prison, I began to reflect on my life and all of its mistakes. I had been born-again just over two years earlier and had backslidden three months ago and had fallen back, yet again, into drug use and addiction. My arrest had been the stopping point that allowed me to see myself, in my sinful state, and bring me to my knees, the place in which Grace and the Blood of our Savior could bring me into right standing with God.
Still I felt disheartened over my situation because I truly wanted to be used by God in the ministry of the King. I began to cry out, saying “God, How can you use a mess like me, I’m no good, my past is a shameful mess, I’m no good to you, I’m a convict with a terrible record. What church? What ministry would use a man like me?”
The tears began to fall from my eyes as I prayed; my heart was truly broken before our LORD. My hearts desire was to serve Him, to reach others for His glory, but my failures seemed to be too many and too large. As I lay in my bunk with a broken heart and spirit, I fell asleep and began to dream. I would like to share that dream with you.
It began as we enter a large, formal dining room of a castle from the era of kings and knights. Heavy rock walls frame a long thick dining table surrounded by heavy chairs and lit only by the glow cast from the flames of a very long fireplace. Over the fireplace, running the length of it was a thick mantle piece crafted from ancient wood. A top this mantle piece was beautiful glasses and goblets. They were magnificent; each one seemed to be a work of art.
Some were fine crystal, some beautifully hand blown long stem champagne flutes, and some were heavy golden goblets encrusted with jewels that gleamed in the fire light. Never before had I seen such a beautiful collection of glasses as they filled the length of the mantel piece. Then I noticed, there on the floor just to the side of the fireplace lay, what you and I know as an “old state cup”. It lay on its side: scratched, beaten and bent. No light gleamed from its side. The cup was abused and worn from its past service in some old institution somewhere. The old cup was obviously out of place in the regal dining room fit for a King.
Then an Arm reached down, extending a wise, old, weathered Hand from a formal robe, picking up the old state cup from the floor, fingers brushing the dust from its rough side and gently placed the cup at the end of the mantle piece, at the back, in the shadow of a golden goblet.
Immediately I felt the joy of the redemptive power given to us by the Saviors Hand, the cup was placed on the mantle with all the others. And just as I thought the dream might be over, that same Hand reached up to the mantle, extended fingers began to touch each glass, tracing the rims of some, feeling the stems of others, testing the heft of the golden goblets. Each one in turn as the Hand moved over the mantle, as if to choose one to drink from. Finally the Hand reached the end of the mantle, after touching one last fine jeweled goblet, the Hand reached the old state cup. Tracing one Finger softly around the frazzled rim, He took the cup from atop the mantle to be placed at the head of the dining table for His use.
I awoke from the dream and the tears once again began to fall from my eyes as I came to understand that I am that “old state cup” the LORD had chosen to use me for His service despite my faults and wretched past.
You and I, brothers, are all just beaten, scratched and bent old state cups, but the Father desires to use men just like you and me despite our pasts. We will reach those that came from a past like ours as no one else can. The Father will choose us because of our past. Thank you, LORD, for making me an “Old State Cup.”

Family Happenings

Hello friends....it's so hard to believe that we are nearing the month that brings us Fall! :) I am happy since that is my favorite season of the year! The last two mornings, we have woke up to the low 60's and I couldn't be more thrilled about that! Last night, on a drive home from our friend, the Smiths, we had the windows down and I smelled burning leaves. Nothing like making one long for Fall! :) But I know, in reality, we still have quite a few more hot summer days ahead of us. This summer has not been as hot though, since we have had so many cloudy, rainy days. Our neighbor man told us we have had over 38" of rain since the beginning of June! :O That has to be close to being a record!??

The first full week of August was VBS at our church. Tamara is the only one in our family who is a "student" and this is her last year. Dan wasn't able to make it many night, since he was working at a final paper for school. Danny was the sound man and I was in charge of the parent's cafe. Making sure there were snacks and drinks there for the parent's who wanted to stay and visit for the evening. :)
Our last night, we handed out swords and shields to each of the children. It was a great week!!

Friday night when we left the house for VBS, something didn't sound right. It sounded like we were dragging something along under the van, so I stopped and here we had a VERY flat tire on the back!! :( Thankfully our neighbor man was home and had no evening plans, so he let us borrow his car. We would have been late otherwise.
We took the van to a local shop Saturday to have the tire fixed, but alas, they are not open Saturdays. So we used Dan's Jeep all weekend and Monday morning, we took the van to Walmart. They told us they could not repair the tire because the nail was in the sidewall. Well, as the service guy was talking, he said he'd like to look at our other tires and just like that, he spotted another tire with something in it, also in the sidewall. He sprayed water on it and it bubbled. I am still a little suspicious about that, but we ended up buying two new tires! :( In it all, I am very thankful for a son who is willing to step in and change tires for this mama who never quite remembers how! ;)

Probably the most exciting thing that happened in our family since our last newsletter, is the fact that Dan had completed his very LAST class of online school. Friends, he is FINISHED!! :)

This last class was hard and a bit stressful. I, as his wife, always wonder why he even gets stressed over his classes, because he gets such good grades. But I know that the burden of doing well is on him. I know I would stress too, if it was me. But I am happy to say, he came away from his last class with a 98% average!! That means he maintained his 4.0 the whole way through. I couldn't be more proud of him!! :)
Now we need to find ways to take care of the rest of that student loan. :P

Last week was our first week back to school! Danny started his sophomore year of High School and Tamara is in 7th grade. Seems I was just in 7th grade having to write 500 word reports for passing notes! :D I am so thankful that both the kids are very excited about this year and the things they get to study about. It makes my job as "teacher" so much easier! :)

Our children also got to take part in Teen Court. Turned out there was no case, so the judge used it as a training session for them. Teen Court is designed for juveniles/teens who have their first run in with the law, but is completely run by teens, except of course for the judge. Choosing Teen Court, means that they accept that they are guilty and their peers get to decide what their punishment will be. It can be anything from writing letters of apology, doing a certain amount of hours of community service, etc.

Please continue to pray for us as we seek God’s will for our families future. I am looking into possibly getting a part time job to help out with our needs. There is also a possibility that Dan could get hired at another facility in the near future. We want to do what’s best for our family and trust God to lead us.

July Update

A Story From The Other Side of the Fence
Greetings, my name is Paul Porter and I am here at Gulf Correctional Institution for two months as a chaplain intern. A Texas missions organization called GoNow missions selected this ministry opportunity as an option for summer missions for the summer of 2013. God placed an interest for this prison ministry experience on my heart, and in the end, GoNow decided to call me here. Before coming to Gulf Correctional Institution, I had never been involved with prisons in any fashion, so this was going to be a first time venture. God has blessed me with a missions partner to serve here at Gulf Correctional Institution, and his name is Josh Wood. I will be leaving here and going back to Texas on August 1, but I would like to present my testimony of my experiences at the prison as I have reached the halfway point of my stay here in Florida.
My first week here, I had to undergo new employee orientation in order to learn the procedures and safety precautions within the prison. Also, I was intensely trained about prisons, ministry, and people (inmates and staff) by Chaplain David Ring, who is supervising the chaplaincy internship this summer. The second week, I was able to be inside the chapel and intermingle with inmates. Throughout this week, I shadowed Chaplain Daniel Henry to learn about the inmates, how to interact with them, and everything that transpires within the chapel. The third week was when I received the privilege to be directly involved with the chapel programs. On Monday, I was asked to offer the Gospel of Jesus Christ to inmates who wanted to check-out the chapel during Chapel Intro. During this time, I proclaimed that everyone is separated from God because of sin and all people need to admit, confess, and repent for their sins—otherwise the wages of sin is eternal death. Since God created mankind and loves mankind, God had a plan of redemption in His Son Jesus Christ who bore all our sins on the cross. God raised Jesus from the dead three days later, so that when believers in Christ die they will resurrect from death too and have eternal life with God. The next day, I was honored to have sat in on graduation of chapel discipleship classes and then baptize fourteen inmates. I have, also, been blessed to facilitate a discipleship class called Experiencing God on Thursday mornings. Throughout the rest of the week, I got to observe and learn in classes like Celebrate Recovery, Most Excellent Way, and Common Solution Recovery while building relationships with the inmates. Last week, the chapel hosted a concert played by the band Rhymz Suhreal and they glorified God through music and testimony. Also, throughout my time here, I have been introduced to other chaplains and ministers in the area to learn about prisons, ministry, and being a man of God. I am very excited for the rest of my time at the prison! These experiences have been great, but I now want to testify of what God has revealed to me thus far.
When first arriving at the prison, I did not really know what to expect because my thoughts and emotions about prisons and ministry were scattered. I prepared my heart and mind to be a blank slate and learn about what goes on in the prison by real life experience and not what is proclaimed by words, television, or uninformed perceptions. Since I have been inside the compound, I wholeheartedly notice that people inside the prison are not any different than outside the prison. Inmates in the prison make bad choices, desire unhealthy effects, and rebel against authority, but that is exactly the same world outside the prison. On the other hand, inmates make good choices, desire healthy effects, and obey authority, and that is also exactly the same world outside the prison. Regardless if people are in prison or not, everyone needs their character transformed. Those in prison can receive a character transformation, and those not in prison can end up in prison at any moment because of a bad choice from their personal character. All people have a character defect called sin, but it can be restored—inside or outside a prison. This can only occur through faith in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus—God’s only Son.

Thoughts to Ponder

“God will help her at break of day.” (Ps. 46:5b). This phrase has significant imagery attached to it. The Psalmist made many references to God’s faithfulness in his writings. This particular phrase most likely refers to a specific event in Israel’s deliverance from Egypt.
Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward it, and the Lord swept them into the sea. The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived. Exodus 14:27-28

David uses an event that is imbedded in the Israelite psyche. He gives this event as support for his opening “God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble (Ps. 46:1, HCSB)”. Literally translated, “a helper in times of trouble he is found [to be] greatly.”

The break of day is a metaphor for God’s deliverance. Three other times the Bible refers to it (Ps. 30:5, Is. 17:14; 37:36). In Psalm 30, we are assured that God’s discipline is momentary (“weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning”), but that His favor lasts for a lifetime. Isaiah records a mighty deliverance in an impossible situation. “Then the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies!” (37:36).

God is the refuge of all who are in a relationship with Him. When life is overwhelming, when we feel like there is no hope, we must never forget Who He is! He is the God who controls everything by His word. All things are at His Command. “Yahweh of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.Selah” (Ps. 46:11, HCSB) ~ Dan

Family Happenings
It’s seems the summer months are just flying by. I wish there was a way I could add one more month to our summer before school starts again, but I guess it would just fill up like the rest of them do! :) We are staying busy and are trying to get some de-cluttering done in the process! Seems it’s a never ending job, but I feel like I’m making progress. My goal is to have a home for everyTHING in my house! Learning how to make do with less space is good for me!
GEMS is preparing for our first fundraiser banquet without a fundraiser coordinator. Candice did a super job the last few years, but because of family obligations, she stepped down from the position. I am going to be filling in as decorator and know that I cannot fill her shoes, so I am going to try my best to be me, and do what Me can do! :) I’m up for the challenge, I think! :)
I had the privilege to go with two other ladies to share a service at Gadsden Correctional, the end of June. The volunteer chaplain that normally goes with us, was on vacation, but he insisted we could do it without him. The other two ladies conspired and put me in charge!! ;) I almost panicked though when I realized that meant I also had to be the moderator! I feel a little like Moses, I can’t speak in front of a crowd. Plus, I was having a really hard time coming up with something to share, but after praying, God led me to share from Psalm 139 .  and He also gave me the words to speak throughout the evening as moderator. The service went so smoothly...the chapel workers were a huge help and even the officer overseeing the service was extra helpful!! God was at work! The highlight of the evening was giving a goodbye hug to a lady that wasn’t supposed to be released till 2020, but she was getting out early and couldn’t wait to see her family again....she was a faithful chapel attendee, and my prayer is that she stays strong in the outside world. Pray for Charlotte!
Daniel has been helping his friend Dylan, at Dylan’s dad’s store. They are cleaning out and remodeling a back room on the store. One day he came home with lots of paint on him. We wondered if any got on the walls! :) Boys! There is also a 3rd friend helping, Jed. I think this is the highlight of their summer!
Tamara is content to spend her summer reading. We’ve been to the library countless times for more books! :) She is also becoming a willing helper around the house, which makes me happy!
Dan & I just celebrated our 17th anniversary on Saturday. Some friends offered to keep the kids for a good part of the day and also gave us a gift card to Longhorn’s Steakhouse. So we enjoyed a little shopping at Pier Park in Panama City Beach, ate supper and then spent a little time on the beach as the last rays of sun faded from the sky. The 70 minute drive one way gave us lots of time to talk....about life, about our dreams. I feel so blessed that God brought Dan and I together, two total strangers from different parts of the country! I am excited for where God will lead us in the next 17 years!
Continue to keep our family in your prayers!! There may be some changes in our life in the next few months and we covet your prayers that God’s will be done and that we can rest in Him even if things don’t go as we hope.
If you can take a few minutes, we would love to hear from you, too! :) God bless~
~Twila
